Act II: The Hunt for Shadows ยท Chapter 6
Session 36
The Spider's Web
The Spider introduces herself and greets the five as the heirs of Ederia, confirming that she already knew who they were. She however promises that she will not reveal their identities to anyone despite the price they'd pay, believing it'd be better to have the heirs as loyal customers.
With that, the heirs begin asking their questions. They learn of the cult and it's three branches in Ederia, Soleilae, and Maldaris. Each one has their own focus, but only the Ederian branch seems to be new, with the other branches having been working for the past ten years in preparation. All three branches seemed to be lead by The Shepard.
The Spider reveals that Edwinn is connected to the Shepard, but refuses to tell him how regardless of the price he's willing to pay, she is only willing to tell Xanthe, who turns the offer down, much to Edwinn's dismay.
It's revealed that there are 6 phylactery pieces. Three are held by the cult, with three remaining free. The rest are in the vault of Solebreuve in the Sanctum Depths, the Scorched Sepulchur, and one is held by the Spider herself.
The Silk Spider also shares that she doesn't know the location of the Ashen Shrine, merely has a part of the puzzle of figuring out where it is, with another piece being held by Zephoros.
Further questions circle back to what Via and Cailynn saw in the basement. The Spider reveals the Wildblood man was Kaeleth Antlersworn, a man who saw Voresh slaughter many of his people. He attempted to attack Voresh, and somehow the Shepard was able to pull the man into his service for the cult. The Ederian was a man of House Veltarius, Reyland Rathmere, a largely unknown man in the political court of Ederia.
Via decides to take the Silk Spider up on a personal offer to learn more about the Oracles in her mother's homeland. Via ultimately gives the Spider one of her memories before offering her answer.
In ages past during the War against The Dark, there was an oracle who was abused by the Gods. While helping some heroes in the Astral Sea, she was left behind during a battle in a realm of nothingness. When she finally returned to the material plane, she learned that all of the Old Gods had died, and she decided to take her revenge in other ways, by taking the blood of any touched by that ability to see what they shouldn't.
Xanthe stays behind alone to speak with the Spider, inquiring about her mother and learning that she was last seen in the Kingdom of Maldaris. She was then seen sailing south, though the destination was not shared. Before Xanthe departs, the spider warns her against refusing to tell Edwinn what's going on with his past. Xanthe remains steadfast in her decision though.
The heirs spend the night in the guest rooms of the Silk Spider, planning their next moves. Ultimately, it is decided to return to Colline before setting out to go and save Zephoros.
Via opens up about her choice to pay the Spider, wanting just someone to be honest with her about what's really going on in that country. She's already losing parts of herself through this ritual, at least this way she felt she had some control.
With the night pushing further boundaries with each sibling, they all depart to rest, ready to travel back to Colline the next day. Cailynn attempts to ask Samson about the Wildblood, wondering if he recognized the name. Samson offers a berry that Cailynn eats, allowing Samson to speak fluently to her and have her understand him. Cailynn sits with her best friend, ready to listen to what he has to say.
