Act I: The Gathering Shadows ยท Chapter 18
Session 18
Family, Reunited
The airship Elendara's Promise arrives in Skyhaven, carrying King Talon and the King's Hand. As the ship prepares to dock, Talon gathers his children and speaks of unity, how crucial it is that they present themselves as one family, one force, in the days ahead. The kingdom watches, he reminds them, questioning whether the King's Hand can truly work together. For the duration of the Sentinel Festival, they must stand side by side.
Upon disembarking, they are greeted by Lady Marianne Blackthorne, alongside five of the seven individuals who will compete for Sentinel agreeing to host a dinner once all candidates arrive.
Each brings unique strengths to the competition that will unfold over the coming week. With two days remaining before the festival begins, the King's Hand disperses to make final preparations. For the first time, Octavia meets her uncle from her mother's side, while Edwinn is at last reunited with his wife, Astrid, and their daughter Freya. After twelve years of secrecy, the Falkrest family finally meets them. The joy of this meeting reinforces for everyone why their mission matters so deeply. Protecting Edwinn's family from the Spymaster's dark intentions. Yet with the festival looming, they agree to postpone confronting Davion until they can speak with both the High King of the Nornathi and their father, seeking guidance on how best to proceed.
The siblings host a dinner for all seven candidates. Bjorn Oldblood of the Serpent's Grove, Lord Garret Greenmire of the Lowlands, Brenna Stonehill ranger of the wilds, Viktor Bloodmoon of Maldaris, Thalia Aurelius of Elysia, Seraphina Lumanis of the Sanctum of Mercy, and Astarius Voidwalker of the Astral Sea. During this dinner, the siblings begin to scratch the surface of the individuals and learn more about their motivations and personalities.
That evening, Marik makes a startling discovery. Landor, Lady Marianne's son, is revealed to be Raynere's child, a secret known only to Lady Marianne herself, and now to Marik. She grants him permission to share this revelation with the King's Hand, but requests the honor of telling Talon about his nephew herself, when the time is right.
Dawn breaks and the Sentinel Festival begins. Each candidate steps forward to address the crowd, introducing themselves with speeches that reveal both their strengths and their ambitions. Lady Marianne takes the platform to announce the first challenge: a fast from dawn until dusk throughout the entire festival, testing each candidate's restraint and ability to resist temptation.
Six days remain, with six more challenges ahead. The question that hangs in the air is whether the King's Hand can maintain their unity, or if the trials ahead will test more than just the Sentinel candidates.
Edwinn spends time with his wife, opening up about the disagreement he had with Talon, and his fear of being caught regarding what he did that night. Astrid speaks kinds words and comforts him, hoping that his family will understand. Edwinn reminds her that tomorrow night, he will finally reveal to everyone who is targeting them.
That night, Cailynn offers Xanthe a refined version of the charm that she offered her when they were younger, this one boosted with actual magic. Xanthe refuses it, saying that she wants nothing to do with the occult and witchcraft. Cailynn tells her that she may do whatever she wants with it, even throwing it away or destroying it. Despite this however, Xanthe does keep the necklace in the back of her drawer.
With that, the festival officially begins with the first match, a sort of underwater tug of war presented as a mixture of strength, cunning, and whatever resources the contestants can use. While all perform admirably, at the end the three overall winners are Garett, Viktor, and Astarius. With that, the King's Hand prepare for the second challenge of the festival, and the multitude of challenges they face as a group.
