Act I: The Gathering Shadows ยท Chapter 28

Session 28

Revelations

After the bloody display, the council and King's Hand head to a separate room to discuss the Devil's final words before departing. Edwinn admits that he did kill Davian, finishing him off on the same night of the cultist attack on Skyhaven. The council and siblings are all shaken by this revelation, though it's ultimately agreed that Edwinn will be left out of custody, though is restricted to staying in the Keep until the situation is resolved. After a tense conversation, the heirs leave Edwinn, all of them in various degrees of hurt from the deception.

Edwinn is later cleared that night, after taking advice from both the Lord Regent and Xanthe, suggesting that the devil was perhaps influencing his mind and his actions were not his own. Edwinn rejoins his wife and daughter, grateful to be free, but saddened by the fact that his family does not understand his decisions. Xanthe visits him, offering her support, which he appreciates.

The next day, Marik and Salara are surprised to see the dragon finally emerge from the egg, fully formed and free of its former prison. Marik bestows him with the name of Thorn and introduces him to the rest of the council and his siblings, though to mixed levels of comfort.

Cailynn meets with Sir Otis, speaking to him about her intent to make the Serpent's Grove a fully formed part of Ederia, and her plans to make sure that the locals and Ederian Watch have as little conflict with one another as possible. Otis tries his best to work with Cailynn, though seems to have concerns about the longevity of the mission.

Xanthe has a busy month herself, training Edwinn in the use of a longsword, and also attending a funeral. She goes and visits Rohavi, whose father was slain during the attack on Skyhaven. Xanthe brings an envoy to make sure that the funeral is shown the respect and protection that it deserves. She offers Rohavi her condolences, offering to do what she can to help him through this time.

Marik announces Thorn to the people, assuring them that their goal was to help protect and empower the people of Ederia. He also encourages them that Lord Garrett and the King's Hand would always be there to make sure that Marik did not abuse this new power.

Cailynn on her way to the Serpent's Grove stops to visit Sir Cedric Eldran, now the head of House Eldran after the passing of his mother. He initially refuses Cailynn's meeting, but Cailynn insists to be seen and heard. Cedric dismisses Cailynn's efforts to be heard and have him be reasonable, as Cedric has no interest in helping her with her efforts of the Serpent Grove. Cailynn gets frustrated to the point of slapping him, and Cedric warns her that his house is going to call in all the debt that the crown owes them, which the kingdom is unable to pay back at this time. Cailynn leaves, incredibly hurt and frustrated.

Meanwhile, Xanthe goes to visit Talon, staying at his bedside and pleading for him to wake up so he can help them in this difficult time. To her surprise, Talon awakens. All the siblings, minus Cailynn, are gathered. Edwinn attempts to heal Talon and finds that his magic actually works. Marik also tries his own magic, seeing that his magic is just as effective. Talon is overjoyed and the siblings do celebrate their father's return, though many dread the implications of what has been done to him....
