Act I: The Gathering Shadows ยท Chapter 29
Session 29
The Last Quiet Hour
Cailynn continues her journey into the Serpent's Grove, but decides to travel deeper as she learns that the Elders have all moved to a deeper city known as Quatl Ithlan. She rests the night there with Bjorn and her guards, hearing voices and memories of Talon and Senua from the past.
Back at Crown's Rest, Talon calls Marik in to discuss his behavior. Marik tells the truth about his concern for Talon, but also of what really transpired with Davian during Talon's coma. Talon requests for Marik to continue to show support for Edwinn, concerned of what Edwinn could become if he is shunned and ignored from his siblings.
Talon speaks to Edwinn as well, acknowledging his disappointment in his son's rash actions, but ensuring him that he is still loved by his family, and that he understands Edwinn's desire to do everything for his family.
Talon speaks to Xanthe, requesting of her that she kills Edwinn should he starts showing physical signs of falling prone to Necromancy magic, a power that Edwinn's grandmother on his mother's side was strongly connected to. Xanthe promises Talon to use her best judgement.
The next morning, Talon visits Via and speaks about how much she is needed by her siblings, now more than ever. Via acknowledges that she doesn't trust Edwinn and sees the damage and pain the others are in. Via vows to Talon to step up despite being the younger. Talon voices his pride for her Falkrest spirit before gifting her a dagger that his own mother used.
Marik sets up a meeting with Elandor Veythrun, wanting to clear the air about the dragon and making sure that they did not see each other as enemies. Elandor acknowledges that he is more concerned with the possible return of the Crimson Court over the Dragon's Triarchy. He also tells Marik about infernal and necromancy magic that came from the carriage Xanthe rode in. The two promise to share information before parting ways, both seeking to help Ederia.
Cailynn arrives at Quatl Ithlan with the help of a guide known as Kale. After arranging her meeting with the Elders, Cailynn heads down to the memory pool, but finds herself quickly overwhelmed by the multitude of images, sounds, and memories that come forward. Cailynn sees a memory of a brother and sister arguing about the nature of the Serpent's Grove before seeing her protected floating above her in the water, watching her. The creature soon speaks to her.
The creatures recognize Cailynn as the daughter of Senua, acknowledging her two bloodlines and how they flow together, while acknowledging Cailynn's fear. The creature seems to acknowledge that while it is not The Great Serpent, it has a connection to it. Cailynn questions the creature of why it allowed the poor treatment of Cailynn in Crown's Rest or the generally bad things that have taken place in the Serpent's Grove. The creature acknowledges that pain and anguish are necessary for empathy, to allow Cailynn to be the one to make the change. Cailynn makes a pact with the creature, moving forward in her power while also offering protection to Via against the creatures that are connected to her.
Xanthe struggles with her training with Talon, finding that she is able to make the correct moves but is unable to fully capture what she needs. Talon decides to bring in another teacher, hoping another perspective will help: Sir Otis, in this case. The knight aids Xanthe, encouraging to embrace her connection and to pull from the plane of hell that she is connected to. Despite some hesitation, Xanthe is able to push through and succeed.
Finally, Cailynn meets with the Elders, imploring them to follow her petition to join Ederia proper. Despite some resistance, Cailynn is able to convince them, especially when offering them a dedicated seat on the council. With that accomplished, Cailynn travels back to Crown's Rest, ready to meet with her family and decide their next steps.
