Act II: The Hunt for Shadows ยท Chapter 9
Session 39
Acts of Humility and Hope
The session opens with Talon in his personal study, writing out a ltter to Edwinn, detailing how Talon met his mother and the two fell in love. He chronicles their years together, facing a beholder in her inn, falling in love, and eventually leaving the adventuring life behind and settling down when she was with child. Some time later, Talon found a chest in their room that he had never seen. He was able to unlock it and began to read from a thick leather bound book. What he read shocked him, citing it as the worst day of his life when he found out the truth. He wants to write down this truth to Edwinn but cannot bring himself to do it, despite knowing that his death is coming soon.
Xanthe and Moreau train together, but stop when Moreau says that she saw Xanthe channel a being behind her, that of a devilish man standing beside her and enhancing her attacks. Xanthe assures Moreau that she is seeing things and the two promptly end their training session there.
The heirs meanwhile continue their journey down the Pilgrim's Road. They settle in after another day of traveling. Torwynn requests Via to join him on a watch, taking the time to apologize for his behavior and speak with the princess about her time in Arcanveil. As they speak, Torwynn is able to deduce Via's complicated feelings about her mother and the recent discovery she made, offering what assistance he can. Via also takes the opportunity to ask about what exactly happened with Xanthe's mother, with Torwynn able to explain only what he saw and how he was told that Xanthe's mother seemingly changed overnight, abandoning Talon and her fmaily seemingly at the drop of a hat. The watch ends peacefully as Cailynn and Edwinn take the second one.
During a game of "guess the drawing" that Samson wins by a landslide, Cailynn and Edwinn discuss the recent arrival of Pelor. Cailynn offers her support, believing that the God's return might be the purpose that Edwinn is seemingly missing. She cautions him to still keep his guard up, but ofers her support to him. The two remain vigilant, having another uneventful watch.
The next day the heirs arrive at the ruined chapel where the cult is preparing their magical assault on Zepharos's tower. The battle begins and while the heirs seemingly have the upper hand, the cult's magic users prove quite strong and knowledgeable about the heirs themselves.
They try to charm Thorn, bringing the dragon to their side, calling her weaker and more cowardly than her two siblings.
They refer to Cailynn by the true name of Veilwalkers, a name only known to few.
And they say something about Edwinn, though only Cailynn hears it and grows concerned by whatever is said.
After some close calls the remaining cultists are slain, their ritual fully halted. The heirs look around the chapel and find a brazier with a song inscribed upon it, along with a cellar door that leads down to a supply room. Ready to explore the room and regather supplies, the heirs prepare to discuss their next move.
